What Is “How to Get The Job” About?

I have been helping people get hired by companies for over 15 years. During my tenure, I have seen a handful of people do it flawlessly. Their resume was perfect, their interviewing technique was crisp and confident, and their negotiating skills allowed them to get top dollar for the role they were pursuing. Unfortunately, as I said I have been doing this for over 15 years, and I can count all those case studies on one hand. Far too often, I have seen people go down in flames.

Most often people fumble to put together an average resume, let alone an amazing one which will help them get noticed ahead of their peers. If the resume is strong, then often the interview will suffer. I can’t tell you how many times I have been able to stump an amazingly bright candidate with a question they did not expect. Truthfully, a skilled interviewer can make the smartest of people feel less confident.

If a candidate has made it through this rigorous process, they are then asked the all intimidating question of, “what are your compensation expectations?” The real question a guy like me is asking is, what is the lowest we can pay you to do this job with motivation and a smile?

My hopes in writing this blog is that people will learn from others’ mistakes and at the same time get their dream job by knowing what the person on the other side of the table is thinking. How should a resume be built? What is the question behind the question during an interview? What is the right way to respond to get the best offer possible? I hope you enjoy the lessons learned and become a stronger candidate for reading them. – Tony Martin
